How My Online Flute Lessons Work

Online lessons are a great option if you’re busy, live far away, or just like learning from the comfort of home. Over the past few years I’ve taught students online in different cities and time zones!

What You Need for Online Flute Lessons

Setup:

  • A computer, tablet, or phone
  • A stable internet connection
  • Zoom/Google Meet/FaceTime
  • Your flute, a music stand, and your music

Nice to have (but not required):

  • Headphones or earbuds
  • A separate device to play backing tracks
  • A simple external mic (we can talk about options if you’re interested)

I’ll send you a short guide with tips for sound and camera angle, so we can see your hands and posture clearly.

What a Typical Online Lesson Looks Like

Every student is different, but a 30–45 minute lesson usually follows this flow:

  1. Check-in
How did practice go? What felt easy or hard?
  2. Warm-up & tone
Breathing, long tones, simple exercises to get your sound working.
  3. Technique
Scales, articulation, fingers, or specific technical spots in your music.
  4. Pieces / band music / audition material
We work through your pieces, stopping to fix rhythm, phrasing, and musical details.
  5. Wrap-up & practice plan
I summarize what we did and give you clear, written practice notes so you’re not guessing between lessons.

Benefits of Online Flute Lessons

Students and families often tell me they appreciate online lessons because:

  • there’s no travel time or rushing in traffic
  • lessons can continue smoothly during bad weather or busy seasons
  • they can work with a teacher they connect with, even if we don’t live in the same town
  • they can record parts of our lesson to review later

For many students, online lessons end up feeling just as personal and effective as in-person ones.
